PROJECTS: Signs For Myself, Signs with Steve Lambert, 2006-2007
I began to make visual reminders or “SIGNS FOR MYSELF” in 2006. I was having trouble remembering very important things about myself or about life in general. I found that making them into drawings helped me. I felt like many of the sentiments that were useful to me might also be helpful to others. In the spirit of generosity, I decided to make them and give them away by putting them up around the city. Artist Steve Lambert joined me in this mission, (he made his own signs) and although we are very different people, and different artists, it was the beginning of a collaboration that has lasted several years.
In the Spring of 2007, Steve and I continued creating drawings together, each of us conceiving of them individually, and sometimes bouncing ideas off of each other. The following day, we went out and placed them in spots around the city that seemed relevant, or that begged the context for the drawings, or where the space itself was interesting. We were also part of a series on Japanese TV about American artists associated with Eyebeam Center for Art and Technology. It changed the experience to some extent to be followed by a guy with a video camera – but hopefully the result (that someone might see the signs on their own and be inspired) was still the same.
